I'm a fan of Street Fighter and have long appreciated it's colourful cast of characters.

With Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, a character appeared that has captured my interest for quite some time.

Towering over an estimated 7 feet tall, mysterious, ubiquitous, grumbly and a snazzy dresser, Q made a rather large impact on me from the first time I chose him amongst the sea of new faces in Street Fighter 3.

His move design, the fact that next to no official information was given about him led me to analyze ever little detail about his identity and I've been speculating even till this very day.

Sadly, Q has not had any appearances in an official game for ages. He's made cameos in the Udon books and art has shown of his Iron-Masked mug, but outside of that it seemed as if he was forgotten.

That is, until today. With Street Fighter 5, Capcom launched an Encyclopedia that has been surprisingly focusing on minor side characters and past playable combatants in equal amounts of detail. Remember that guy in the yellow suit who bares more than a passing resemblance to WWE legend Jimmy Hart in Balrog's glorious Vegas stage? They gave him an official name and backstory!
So far the blog has been written from the perspective of a Shadaloo trooper carefully observing the playable and unplayable characters that are part of Street Fighter's impressive yet often overlooked lore.

Some of the entries are still in Japanese and have yet to be translated, but today, as you can guess by my obsession and subject matter, a certain someone was featured.

Speculations on Q's identity have been present since his inception and it remains to be seen if we'll ever get an answer. Theories range from him being a wounded M. Bison to Chun Li's father.

In the early days I thought of him being Charlie, somehow resurrected...that is until I saw a few users mention the similarities between Q and a CIA agent named David.

Recently on the shoryuken.com forums users Doctrine Dark and bakfromon started providing scans and translating information from informative Capcom Books that sadly were never made available in the North American markets. They've been doing a fantastic job in helping new and old fans alike learn more about obscure Street Fighter knowledge!

Using their information I provided as much information on Q that was available, before deciding to share my personal observations about his character aesthetics and potential clues to his identity.

You can see my efforts below:

While the new entry does not give any clues to his identity, the past entries have made a few people realize something.

Chun Li's father - Dorai has had an honorary presence in the Street Fighter universe since the blockbuster second entry, though interestingly his name or appearance was never canonized till recently. He received his name and appearance from the non-canon, yet amazing treatment- Street Fighter II: V. A rather entertaining anime series created in the 90s.

For a while the fate of Chun Li's father has been danced around. That has led to a lot of speculation, but ultimately nothing concrete has materialized. In the Udon Street Fighter II comics, specifically Street Fighter II Turbo #10 a short story focuses on Q by way of an agent speculating about who or what he could be. While we are never given a true answer, a few speculative bits are thrown and one of the images shows Chun Li's father being injected with some sort of chemical and the iconic mask being placed on his face.

All this leads back to the recent entries for the Capcom Fighter's encyclopedia. One of the as of yet to be officially released Japanese-only entries featured Dorai, though his getup looked a little familiar.

Could this be coincidence? A Red herring? Only time will tell, but on a personal level, I hope that Q, if any of his identity is even hinted at, is an entirely new character and not Chun Li's father.

I personally have had issues with the idea and if you've ever seen any of my posts online regarding Q, I've made mention of this point of view.

My issues:

It would be more than a bit out of the left-field.

I know that Street Fighter has altered and retconned events, especially now in SF5 as they're pushing for a significantly more cohesive narrative, but in SF3 Q didn't have even the slightest connection or interaction with Chun Li.

In the arcade version of 3rd Strike, characters had dialogue against one another. Q mostly just has short, nonsensical statements, but when Oro faces off against Q, he makes a reference to the 70s show, Robo Detective K. For Chun Li, there's not a peep of "that looks like my dad's favourite tie!" or "that kick....that felt familiar."

It muddles Bison's approach to tormenting her

Bison has always stated her dad is dead, even his SF5 win quote against Chun Li states he'll send her to the same place. Bison directly said he killed her dad in Alpha 2, but it's been retconned
that Vega seems to have "killed him" or was present to see his final moments SF5. He even recognizes the familiarity in their kicking styles .

She's clashed with Shadaloo A LOT. Bison literally feeds on
negativity to empower him and torturing people is a national pastime for Shadaloo. Why wouldn't he use
her father as a trump card? Mocking her with the ambiguity of his fate
until finally showing he devolved him into a shambling shadow of his former self is absolutely what he would do considering how much Chun Li and other heroes have cost him. I know the release dates of the games don't
match the narrative timeline, but still, things done in SF since Street Fighter 3's release haven't made
the effort to further establish a link between Q, Shadaloo and Chun Li. Street Fighter 4 started several plot elements that are now
appearing in SF5 and according to bakfromon's translation of Q's latest entry, Crimson Viper has been dispatched to learn more about him by the CIA. If Bison had Chun Li's father in any form, that would be the prime way to damage her resolve. Considering how badly she's been a thorn in his side, I cannot see what he wouldn't take that avenue.

Q running around freely for such an extended time is not feasible given what we understand of Bison's views of his property

Bison doesn't care about loyalty, but strength...he does, however NOT
like people messing with his toys or his toys gaining sentience (please refer to his treatment of the Dolls in Alpha 3 and how he crushed Seth once he started playing things outside
his allotted freedom - Bison knew of him gaining sentience but didn't care as long as he played nice). Q is shown to be incredibly powerful and has been
noticed by several civilian bystanders, even the CIA is fully aware of his existence,
but is scrambling to find out WHAT he is. If he was a Shadaloo product
that gained freedom, Bison would not let Q escape or STAY free and be
visible enough to have bystanders describe him well enough that Richard
Bergman (PR Chief of the CIA) has to frequently put out statements about not being
able to confirm or deny Q's existence. He's achieved urban legend status due to how many photographs and images he's been found in (all of them related to crime scenes). Bison has managed to keep some of his most sinister secrets off the books entirely. It's still not known the sheer number of politicians and how much of the Military Brass he owns. Charlie never mad much headway in his quest due to his own superiors blocking him frequently due to getting too close to Shadaloo's truth. Now that we know Q's been running around well before Street Fighter 3, that makes things even more curious for why Bison would ignore him. Afterall, if he knows he can squeeze out some despair for a deal he'll take it. He made Cammy willingly give up Decapre to save her life and it still haunts her to this day much to Bison's twisted joy. If Q was as little as Chun Li's favourite manager at the clothing store, Bison would make use of that and make her suffer.

Robs Q of his own direction and his own identity:

He's
the wildcard figure introduced in 3rd strike. No connections to anyone,
he could pop in and out of the series while peppering clues to his
identity and fostering new plot points. He very well could be connected to the new (at the time) antagonists -- Gill and the
Illuminati or even bring in a whole new angle to the series. Connecting
him to Shadaloo changes his potential story trajectory, but still gives him room to grow.
Making him Chun Li's dad reduces his potential drastically;

We're not just going to learn he's her dad and have them never meet or
quickly and neatly resolve this particular plot point with a walk into the sunset. If they meet and he's mind controlled,
it'll be a "I know you're in there!" fight, which I don't like seeing
overused in media and we already have Guile fighting to bring Charlie back to the side of light. There's also the possibility that Chun li will reconnect with him and he'll probably meet a tragic
end while saving her from whatever created him. Or he's somehow now villainous and
she has to track him down and stop him through several games. Overall, I
can't see Chun Li learning that Q's her father and not having a negative impact appear for both characters. Q goes from a Pandora's box of awesome to a frequently abused plot point for kidnapped characters close to the heroine and it's all dashed against the rocks "WHY'DYOUDOTHIS?!"

Last, but certainly not least, it holds Chun Li's narrative back:

For comparison, I feel Sagat is the character that has the most development in Street Fighter's lore; he went from a mountain of revenge, to a man who upon meeting Dan began to question what revenge could do to one's soul, rejected Bison's methods, came to respectfully view Ryu as a rival, and now is a father figure to two children.

Chun has
been getting there too. She started on the path of vengeance then evolved her quest to
one of justice, but by Street Fighter 3, she had found peace and left behind all the business
with Shadaloo after "her legendary legs brought down THAT organization"
as Urien said. She took care of a girl (who we now know of as Li-Fen in SF5)
and taught other kids Kung Fu. In SF4, it's a move back in time, so it's
understandable that she's making trouble for ol' Shadaloo again when she learns
it's not totally dead by way of S.I.N. (most of the cast in SF4 don't know Bison's alive,
actually, and I can't remember if she's one of the few who does learn he
is alive), but she's fighting for justice and her father but not
letting that define her existence. In her SSF4/Ultra 4 ending, she said, at first
she thought all the things she'd accomplished were due to her father,
and she realizes, yes, in part it was for and due to him, but for her as
well. She says she feels that she can be so much more and decides to
stay being a cop. She will bring about justice and fight evil, but she's
not doing all this just for her father or personal vendettas. She starts doing things for
people like Li-Fen and those kids. She gets a sense of closure, but also
forges forward, being her own person, not defined by her father's
death or as a foil to Bison's evil. A dose of paternal resurrection would make her start the hunt to find out what
really happened to him again and undo the progress, thus pausing her current life with Li-Fen and the others. I don't want to see that
for her. Street Fighter is finally taking chances with it's character evolution by way of designs and lore -- I don't want them to repeat this aspect of her story.

I want to try something a little different. I'm in the middle of a few projects, but I have an idea for one and am thinking of reaching out to the audience (don't be shy, speak up!) and asking if you'd like to see it.

A bit ago I made a tumblr post about Street Fighter's most mysterious combatant, Q. A while back, I had read a theory by someone named Joe Grabko that David, the agent seen in Q's ending is in fact really Q.

I began obsessing over that and posted some of my evidence to support this theory.

I was wondering if any of you would be interested in me sprucing this post up and transforming it into a video?

Sound off in the comments!

Also, here's hoping Q turns up in Street Fighter 5 in some capacity...I've heard rumours he's grown bored herding sheep and is getting a bit stir crazy.
I hope you're all well! A whole new year, new beginnings and new updates!

First up is Maverick Intros the Shockdingo Way (Mega Man X5-X6). This is a revisit of something I did in summer of 2011. It's no secret that I love Mega Man X, I posted about this frequently in the past. With my love of the series, I naturally fell in love with the boss intros; X4's by far is my favorite, but the following games were not slouch either. I decided to put my spin on the X5 and X6 intros and imagined if a future Marvel vs Capcom game had a brawler mode these would be seen following the character selection. I'll hopefully get to more characters in the future, but I've more immediate projects to work on.

Next up, is Fused Evil Goku vs Super Saiyan 5 Vegeta (Dragon Ball EX). This was originally animated by the talented opunu and KoolKeithProductions organized a fan dub. You can hear me as the ever-gravelly and insightful Piccolo!

Well, with this new year, I really hope to amp up production on a few features. I feel that I dropped the ball in 2013, got slightly better in 2014 and need to excel in 2015. Wish me luck everyone! Until next time! D.J. Fresh, delicious and ready to be sampled, grab a glass (and a keyboard) and dive into Tequila Zombies 3!

3 playable characters, an assortment of amazing weapons, powerups and zombified enemies! Some may have a resemblance to a famous face or two! What are you waiting for? Get in on the action! You can hear me as Jeff and see me tear up the place!

Next up, I teamed up with my buddies Danish Goel and FlashChaz once again for more fun!

Play as Alreo's famous (or infamous) Bobby Da Arrow! Known for his marksmanship (and eccentric behaviour), Bobby is the kingdom's only hope against vile invaders! Use timing and a physics based engine to fire perfect shots to save innocents, or punish those pesky Goblins!

Working with these guys is always a blast. They make fun games and put in their own brand of humour into the mix. I had the pleasure of voicing all the characters in the game. What are you waiting for? Oh, the links probably! Check out the game on Kongregate or Newgrounds! The choice is yours!
Here's a brand new entry for Concept Corner!

I decided to do this after a bit of community fun on the official Mighty No. 9 forums. Around last month, the mods created a community voice activity that encouraged us to voice a few of the bosses and supporting characters. I had a bunch of fun doing this, but yesterday, I decided to take the clips I made, throw them into After Effects and give some flair to it all. Here's what I came up with!

Love it? Hate it? Let me know what you all think!

Until next time everyone!D.J. Dixon (Shockdingo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04286065792630655344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129842840225687911.post-42971306934978442022014-11-07T15:46:00.000-08:002014-11-07T15:46:06.711-08:00Aliens and Terror and Rooms! Oh my!Hello all, it's time for another update! I hope everyone had a great Halloween!

I'm a bit late in posting this, but I had a part in the latest Newgrounds collaboration entitled "The Girl In the Room Collab!"

It features various artists utilizing the theme of horror vignettes based upon a young woman trapped in a room. Is she in space being studied by aliens? Is there a supernatural presence? It's up to you to find out!

Also on today's menu is the latest offering from Balthazar and Team Z2! A brand new video for Hyper Dragon Ball Z is fresh and ready!

Hear me as the arrogant Tyrant Freeza! Don't you just want to play? Keep your eyes open DBZ faithful, there's always more on the way! For the latest news on the project, check out the Hyper DBZ page on Facebook, you'll be glad you did!

Until next time everyone! D.J. Dixon (Shockdingo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04286065792630655344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129842840225687911.post-65383111898027990012014-10-26T18:54:00.001-07:002014-10-26T18:54:45.036-07:00Want a Classic? And an update? When? Well....Now Is Time To the 68000 Heart on Fire! ALIEN SOLDIER! (Didn't expect that, did you?)Hello me hearties, time for an update with a new video! The first in my new series: Shocking Showcases! Think of this as an expansion of my Dingo Scraps series, only this wont be limited to giving video games a boost. It will feature broader ranges of content and concepts!

This is a classic run and gun game from Treasure Co Ltd., the same people who brought us the Sega Genesis classic, Gunstar Heroes! Speaking of Gunstar Heroes, a few bosses have cameos in this, one in particular leads to an incredibly compelling sequence!

I love this game so much that I wanted to make a tribute and remix it. I used an edited version of the European translation and blended it with some of the details in the Japanese version of the intro to create a clearer picture of the situation. I also added my own brand of showcasing and razzle-dazzle. (zounds..does anyone even say that anymore?)

I also teamed up with the lovely and talented Mary Alice White on voicing duties. Check the link for her artwork, she's really good!D.J. Dixon (Shockdingo)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04286065792630655344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129842840225687911.post-46604631040076989482014-10-06T21:16:00.003-07:002014-10-06T21:17:34.694-07:00Somethin's in the October air and that..is progress!Hello everybody, I'm back with another update. I've finally spruced up the Concept Corner and Voicebox sections of the site. You can find my a variety of things in each section such as videos, voice demos, audio plays and general mucking about. Watch this space, for a few things will be coming rather soon, and I'm pretty happy about their impending completion!

Huzzah! For organization!D.J. Though I recently got a huge surge of inspiration due to all the talk of the Venom movie going into production and a collaborative art event going on across the web called Symbiote September.

I'm working my way towards a longer fan trailer, but I need to really work on the script. Check back and see what I've got in store for you all!

For now I leave you with these teaser trailers that show poor Spidey being tormented by ol' Brock:
Things aren't 100% yet, but I decided to tackle my old freewebs page and give that a tweak. Here's a run-down of a few things I did:

-I overhauled the resume sections by painstakingly migrating all the links for existing roles into an nicely organized table

-Checked for correct chronological order of role

-Updated expired links and hunted down new ones

-Made a new banner for the header

-Eliminated obsolete sections and made corrections and / or updates to information

I think my work on it makes things look a little less amateure-ish, so that's one less thing I've got to do. Now to give this page some new life blood, open up the to-do list and get to work on 5+ projects that are hideously overdue.

If you've got a minute, please take a look at the improved site and let me know what you think!
Amazing. Well, saying I've neglected this page is a gross understatement. I initially just wanted this space to be a blog where I share my thoughts, but since then, I've realized blogspot can be so much more than that.

We spent the next couple of months squealing with joy at the new worlds we would find and eventually started frequenting the local Blockbuster. Officially, if you want to get technical, my video game history started a bit before that. The family had gone over to a friend’s house and while there, I hung out with the family’s son. He briefly showed me Sonic the Hedgehog and it was really fun, but a bit of a fuzzy memory. What makes the SNES memory so vivid is that this was in our own home and it was our own possession, and most importantly, my sister was there to see gameplay this time around....and we were traumatized by a giant bullet.

Video games were and still are fundamental in our bonding; we have spent countless hours competing to see who would first get a bonus life in the Technodrome level of TMNT IV; Turtles in Time, scratching our heads in confusion on how to play Sega CD’s Sewer Shark, desperately trying to kill Mr. X in Streets of Rage with only 1 life left, and flipping out as we encountered a crippling game freeze on the Aries boss battle of God of War 1. (I swear, that crap happened around 13 times in his second-form-near-death-sword struggle mode.)

We didn’t care; we had both systems and were more concerned with what Blockbuster had to offer. The biggest thing that came to bitterness towards Nintendo was the Virtual Boy. While my sister was off checking out the new releases, I just had to try out the new crazy system on display….it did not end well. I swear, I blame that thing for my imperfect vision and extra dimensional senses. (Good lord…time is…itchy!)

We’ve gone through a lot of consoles and kept a pretty open mind towards new releases. The thing is, even though we didn’t get an N64 or a Gamecube, we still had no hard feelings against Nintendo. Most of the time, what prevented us from getting the system was timing on releases and console exclusive sequels to games we already loved. The two of us were actually curious about the Wii in the beginning, but ultimately couldn’t afford a new system during its good days. There were a small handful of games that seemed like they would be interesting to us, thus we chose to sit that one out. Also, there was a significant frustration about the lack of classic properties being showcased. Yes, we expected a Zelda or a Mario, or a Metroid, but gah! Nintendo has such a rich library of characters at its disposal. They needed to get out of lather-rinse-repeat mode. What’s worse is that with Smash Brothers, it brought back attention to many MIA favourites, but afterwards, zip! Back in the crate Diddy. Thankfully towards the end of its life cycle, we at least saw a new Donkey Kong….and they tried to bring back Kid Icarus with mixed results…

We saw a lot of different arguments on why the system was or wasn’t great. I think between a lack of third party support, some odd E3 moments, and a staggering array of shovelware, Nintendo had made some bad decisions.

Thankfully it seems that the Wii-U is trying to resolve some of those past mistakes and generally has some interesting things coming. I’ll be sitting this one out as well, but mainly due to the fact that I own a PS3 and it’s not time for me to get a new console.

I think it’s too early to tell how things are going for Nintendo, but I do ultimately hope that the Wii-U has a successful venture. Competition is a great driving force and prevents the big three companies from getting lazy.

Wow, that was a rather longwinded origin story….anyways, the second thing that needs explaining is the name of this blog; Electric Voicebox. Well, that’s simple really. I got involved in voice acting about a year after making the screen name. Things were slow, but I finally really started seeing results in around my 2nd or so year of voice acting. Sticking with the electric motif, I thought of the electric voice aids some people use as a result of damage to their larynx.

Captain America fought USAgent, Thor fought Thunderstrike, and Iron Man battled War Machine.
